TV watchdog investigates comments on teenager’s death         14/12/11

Broadcasting regulator Ofcom is to TV presenter Matthew Wright over remarks he made about the the death of Liam Aitchison.

Over 2200 people complained about to the TV watchdog over comments made by Mr Wright on his Channel 5 chat show, The Wright Stuff, over two consecutive days.

Wright sparked widespread outrage when, discussing the death inquiry with a news review panel, he put on a mock Scottish accent and drawled TV detective Taggart’s catchphrase, “there’s been a murder.”

Guest Charlie Baker pointed out the 40-year gap between two high profile murder inquiries on Lewis must be the “longest episode of Taggart ever.”

Wright’s offhand apology the following day did not convince many he genuinely regretted his actions.

The presenter created further controversy by telling his critics to “grow up” and stop a campaign urging formal complaints to broadcaster regulator Ofcom.

Matthew Wright made a more sincere apology on the third day. He has also written privately to the family.

Liam Aitchison’s father Norman was gravely offended by the comic portrayal of his son’s death by the TV show.

Western Isles Council, individual councillors, MP Angus Macneil and MSP Alasdiar Allan are amongst the complainants to Ofcom.
