Stornoway Police mark end of Northern Constabulary       3/2/13

Stornoway Police Station is to open its doors, and cells, to the public at an open day next month to mark the end of Northern Constabulary as a police force in the Western Isles.

In April, it will be amalgamated into a new single pan-Scotland force. All current eight Scottish forces merge into Police Scotland.

An Open Day is being held at Stornoway Police Station on Saturday 30th March between 10am – 3pm. Admission is free.

The fun packed day will have various activities, stalls suitable for young and old. People will have a chance to witness behind the scenes of the newly refurbished station.

There will be a presentation on police firearms and a demonstration from the Western Isles sniffer dog,  Ollie the Collie.

Individuals interested in joining the Police, will have the opportunity to receive the latest recruitment information and speak to various officers about their duties.

PC Cameron Ross, of Stornoway Police said: “This is quite a special event, certainly the first one we have had in the last 20 years to my knowledge.

“There are several reasons behind it. One is to help our local community understand what we are doing to make the public feel safe.”

He added: “There is a lot of valuable work going on behind the scenes which our communities in the Western Isles don't normally get to see.

“Secondly, it is a great way to mark the 38 years of Northern Constabulary before becoming part of Police Scotland.

“It’s also a chance for anyone interested in a career within the police in to have a chat to us about joining.”
