Three wild fires in North Uist       11/3/13

Fire crews are tackling a wild fire which burnt a hydro electric pole and destroyed 10 acres of heather at Carinish, North Uist - the third moor blaze within 24 hours in the same district.

The blaze is under control but a raft of small fires are flaring up across the moor.

Earlier heavy smoke engulfed the main road causing police to shut it for a period.

Fire crews from Benbecula, Lochmaddy and Lochboisdale were summoned to the fire which was spotted around 8.10am.

Last night, another moorland blaze spread over 100 acres of heather and was left to burn.

Yesterday afternoon, some 30 acres of trees were destroyed by a wild fire. Fire crews from Bayhead, Benbecula, Lochmaddy donned breathing sets to get closer to the flames. Beaters were used to put out pockets of flames breaking out across the area.
