Water works hit by powercut             31/1/13

The Bayhead water works on the westside of North Uist was being topped up by road tankers after a powercut at the plant during this week’s storm.

High winds brought down hydro lines in the district on Tuesday evening which stopped the filtering and treatment equipment from operating.

Water bowsers were tankering supplies from Lochmaddy to stop the west side of the island from going dry.

A Scottish Water spokesman said: "Due to a power outage on North Uist, it is necessary for us
to tanker water from the Lochmaddy water treatment works to the Bayhead water treatment works.”

He said the road tankers continued to fill up the Bayhead tanks until the power was restored at the plant and the treatment process reinstated.

He said customers would have not noticed any no change to their normal supply.

The spokesman added: “We want to apologise to our customers for this inconvenience and we
also want to thank them for their patience as we move water between facilities with the tankers.

“We are aware that the presence of the tankers is an unwelcome disruption and we are working around the clock to restore normal service."

The plant was expected to be back to normal today.
