Public consultation over North Uist schools               3/1/13

A proposal to replace the existing three schools in North Uist with a modern centralised campus will seek community consensus next week.

The Comhairle is holding a community conversation concerning the future of education provision on the island on Wednesday 9 January. The forum which starts at 7.30pm in Carinish Hall is open to all.

The council has successfully bid for financial help through the Scotland’s Schools for the Future programme focused on tackling poor schools buildings.

The Scottish Government has agreed to put up a chunk of the cash towards a proposed new centralised primary school on North Uist.

The estimated final cost could be around the £7.2 million for the Westside School on Lewis and the £9 million for the new Daliburgh Primary.

The Comhairle would have to find at least about £4 million for its share of costs.

The site for the centralised campus has not been officially finalised and will be included in a public consultation.

The planned new school would replace the present Lochmaddy, Paible and Cairnish primary schools. Older pupils are being bussed to Lionacleit after the only secondary in North Uist, Paible S2 school, shut last year.
