Two days without water for Sollas homes          19/11/11

Water supplies were being restored to households in Sollas, North Uist, last night after a burst pipe created shortages since early Thursday morning.

Water engineers had difficulties in finding the leak and bottled water had been delivered to homes.

Scottish Water said the burst was now found and it was planed to be fixed by 6pm yesterday evening.

The problem comes three weeks after an aluminium health scare when most of North Uist was warned not to use contaminated tap water for drinking, cooking, making babies feed, or cleaning teeth. Too much aluminium had been poured into the Bayhead water works supply to try and treat organic matter.

This week’s loss of water affected a different pipe network on the island.

Sollas resident Margaret Browning said: “It really is awful and it comes just three weeks since the aluminium situation.

“We were told bottled water would be delivered between 5.30pm and 7pm but it didn’t arrive here until about 8pm on Thursday..

“This is North Uist with yet another water problem and Scottish Water doesn’t seem to provide a reasonable service.

“But they still take out water rates. Are we going to get a rebate on our rates?”

A Scottish Water spokesman apologise for the disruption and inconvenience.

He said the water was due back on at 6pm.

He said: “It only affected 50 properties and most suffered low pressure rather than complete loss of water.

“Engineers were quickly on the case but unless there is water gushing out of the ground, it is very difficult to track down a burst pipe.”
