Updates on a drive to regenerate the economy of North Uist will be given at the islands’ development body’s annual meting on Friday.

The North Uist Development Company is holding its AGM at 7pm in Claddach Kirkibost Centre.

The group plans a community windfarm which aims to achieve a £4 million over 20 years to support community projects in the island though the limited capacity in the local grid presents a serious obstacle to the two-turbine 1.8MW project earmarked to be situated near Clachan.

The group is also taking the lead on the Udal Archive project to return important historical archeological finds back to the island. Many of the historical items like ancient combs, coins and pottery uncovered under the sand dunes on the Grenitote machair offer a timeline of Scotland’s past but are hidden away in a museum store in Glasgow.

Evidence of a Neolithic settlement and a Viking fort have also been found.

Displaying the artefacts in a permanent exhibition locally would provide a cultural, tourism and economic boost to the community.

The development company also supports the improvements and tree planting at the Langass woodlands.
