The ferry pier in Ullapool Harbour is to be extended to create a new berth for the replacement Stornoway ferry.

The £27,000 contract for the design development and construction supervision of the ferry pier at Ullapool has being awarded to Dingwall-based civil engineering consultants, Wallace Stone.

It is proposed to build a longer berth, install a new dolphin and improve harbour traffic management.

Specialists are to undertake underwater investigation of the seabed below the pier.

The contract for the construction work tendered later.

Wallace Stone will be the project manager for the building phase.

A new £42 million vessel is being built in Germany and start serving Lewis late next year. She will take over from the MV Isle of Lewis and the MV Muirneag and provide a combined freight and passenger service.
