Relay swim across the Little M inch                   24/8/11

A team of seven island lads plan to swim across the Minch this weekend. They are setting off, relay style, from Harris to Skye and back again.

The team are attempting this as part of a ‘Talk Talk Challenge’.

This fundraising event is one of many that employees of TalkTalk are doing through-out the year to raise funds for Cancer Research, each year the staff at TalkTalk choose a charity to raise funds for and this year Cancer Research was the overwhelming favourite due to the amount of people it touches.

The group of seven; Chris Baker, Saul Hindson, Tariq Hussain, Rodney Jamieson, Andrew Johnson, Colin Macleod and Fraser Millar will attempt to swim the 30 miles in a relay system, each swimming a mile at a time.

Saul Hindson, who came up with the idea, said: “To make the big money you have to do something big and this challenge seemed to fit that bill, hopefully we can raise some vital funds to help Cancer Research continue its great work.’

The group have been following a tough training schedule for the last 6 months, swimming from North to South Lochs, across Broad Bay and regularly seen doing lengths of Coll Sands.

One member Rodney Jamieson said: “ The toughest part is going to be swimming through the dark. This combined with keeping warm and coping with sea sickness should make it a real adventure, but we are all ready and up for the challenge.’

They plan to leave this Thursday night at 11pm from Rodel pier, swimming through the night and on to the next morning, arriving in Skye at 8am. They will then touch Waternish Point head straight back to Harris, arriving in Rodel at 5pm on Friday .
