Emergency response as plane engine shut down    27/7/11

A full scale emergency was called when a Loganair plane shut down one engine over the Minch on Wednesday afternoon.

Stornoway lifeboat was summoned and fire engines, ambulance and police  raced to Stornoway airport after the pilot issued the urgent alert.

Thirty eight people were onboard the Loganair Saab 340 aircraft when a cockpit light flashed a warning around 2.55pm. The captain speedily shut down the port engine and the plane landed safely.

The return flight was cancelled but the next service to Glasgow left two hours later as scheduled.

Loganair said the aircraft would not take off again until engineers who were arriving from Glasgow complete a “full examination of the engine and associated systems.”

A spokesperson for Loganair said: “The flight crew acted in line with standard procedures to shut down the engine after receiving a warning signal from the flightdeck instruments during the latter stages of the flight.

“The cause of the problem is not yet known, but flight crew are extensively trained for eventualities such as this and undertake practice single-engine landing drills regularly as part of their training and proficiency programme.”
