Uig swimmer takes the plunge          11/8/11

A 70 year old Uig woman took the plunge on Saturday to raise money for charity.

Wearing only a swimsuit, Jutta Grix-Feldt braved the bracing Atlantic to swim the 800 metres fromto the uninhabited island of Pabbay in 34 minutes and 34 seconds.

Saturday’s challenge was the culmination of months of training and hundreds of miles of sea swimming with the aim of raising money for The Linda Norgrove Foundation. She has so far successfully raised £950.00

Originally from Berlin, Gaelic learner Jutta has lived in Uig for 13 years and is a family friend of the Norgroves. She said: “It was just the right day for a swim, calm and sunny. I think the people who came out to support enjoyed standing on the beach in Cnip!”

Throughout her preparations for the swim Jutta had the support of experienced arctic swimmer and author Lewis Gordon-Pugh who provided advice on how to cope with swimming in the sea during the winter when water temperatures often fell below 5 degrees.

Jutta said: “Lewis’ advice was that I had to set my mind on it and stay positive. Having the focus of raising money for such a worthwhile charity and having a specific distance in mind also really helped.

“And I couldn’t have done it without my support team who followed me in a boat and Lorna Norgrove who accompanied me in a kayak. When I came out of the sea I even felt much warmer than usual!”
