Lewis duo cycle length of UK for charity          17/8/11

Two island friends Don Catterall and Martin Jones will next month undertake a unique cycle ride in aid of the Linda Norgrove Foundation.

The pair will journey from the most South-Easterly to the most North-Westerly tips of the UK on a trip they've called 'The Northwest Passage.'

Don Catterall explained: 'We start from Dungeness in Kent on Saturday 27 August and will be following a roughly straight line along the length of the country, arriving at Gallan Head on the Isle of Lewis on Wednesday 14 September.'

Don and Martin concocted the ruse some time ago having met whilst working for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the local authority from which Don recently retired.

The two are filled with a certain amount of trepidation about their 800 mile trip. Martin commented: 'I can't remember why I thought it would be feasible to cycle the length of the UK, but I’m now having to get down to some serious training'

The friends are hoping to write a blog throughout their challenge to detail their progress and would welcome the company of other cyclists en route.

Martin added: ' If you would like to cycle with us for a few hours, or even a day or two, you can see where we are on our blog. Company would especially be appreciated on the last leg which will take place, all being well, on Wednesday 14th September starting in Scaladale in Harris and ending up in Gallan Head.'

John and Lorna Norgrove set up the Foundation to continue some of the work their daughter Linda had been involved in when she was tragically killed in Afghanistan whilst working for a humanitarian aid organisation in October 2010.

John said: 'It's fitting that this is a cycling event as Linda was a keen biker, having undertaken journeys both across the USA and from Lhasa to Katmandu over the Himalayas.'

If anyone would like anymore information or hope to join Don and Martin at any point in their cycle ride, then get in touch with them via their blog (http://donandmartincycle.blogspot.com/) For further details about the Linda Norgrove Foundation visit (www.lindanorgrovefoundation.org)
