Norgrove parents spend anniversary fundraising   8/10/11

The parents of Linda Norgrove, the Western Isles aid worker killed in Afghanistan, are spending the anniversary of her death helping to raise funds for the charity they have set up to continue their daughter’s work.

John and Lorna Norgrove established the Linda Norgrove Foundation last year after their 36 year old daughter was kidnapped and subsequently killed during a failed rescue attempt by US Special Forces. They donated £100,000 of their and Linda’s savings to the Fund, a sum that was subsequently matched by the Scottish Government.

The Fund now stands at more than £330,000 as a result of various fundraising activities which have included cycling, running and swimming challenges, as well as an art auction. Lorna Norgrove and Sofie, Linda’s sister, took part in the Great Scottish Run in September on what would have been Linda’s 37th birthday.

The latest fundraising initiative is the Valtos Peninsula 10k Run which is being held on the anniversary of Linda’s death in the community on Lewis where she grew up. As well as entrants from the local area, people are being encouraged to take part remotely by running 10k wherever they are in the world, wearing a Foundation t-shirt, and posting photographs on the Foundation website.

Entries have come from across the world including Antarctica, Papua New Guinea, Canada, Peru, Australia, New Zealand, Germany and Uganda. Sixty t-shirts alone have been sent to the US.

As John and Lorna Norgrove explained: “We wanted something good to come out of a terrible experience and we know that Linda would have been pleased that we are carrying on her work. She loved Afghanistan and its people and was passionate about trying to help improve the situation for women and children in particular.

“Linda loved travelling but she also loved her childhood home. The Mangersta cliffs were the screensaver on her laptop and her office walls were lined with photographs of Lewis. It is fitting that her friends and family will be running, jogging and walking around the area she loved to mark the anniversary of her death. It is also very appropriate, given her love for other countries, that so many people are taking part in the Run remotely from all corners of the world. Linda would have been proud to see this.”

The Foundation recently announced details of the first projects it has funded. These have included buying beds and toys for a home for children with disabilities in Kabul, purchasing a bread oven, flour and firewood for a widow’s home in Jalalabad and assisting a women’s refuge in the capital. They are also working in partnership with another charity to deliver women’s literacy projects and libraries in remote communities in Eastern Afghanistan.

Donations can be made via the Foundation website at www.lindanorgrovefoundation.org.uk.
