The death of an island teenager is being treated as suspicious by police in the Western Isles.  Though formal identification has yet to be made, the body of 16-year-old Liam Aitchison was found in a secluded derelict house in the village of Steinish near Stornoway.

Evidence found on the scene indicates a suspicious element to his death.

Police officers searching for the boy,  who comes from Lochboisdale and was reported missing last week, made the grim discovery last week.

Hebrides News understands one vital aspect of the inquiry is to try and determine if anyone had been along with the teenager in the building.

Police want to know of the movement of any strangers or of any suspicious activity  in the Steinish village.

Northern Constabulary has drafted in extra officers with “specific expertise” from Inverness. Extensive door-to-door inquires are being carried out in the village and an incident room has been set up in Stornoway police station to co-ordinate the investigation.

Tonight, Western Isles chief inspector Gordon Macleod said a “search of the area he was last seen in was carried out. On Tuesday 29th November at 2pm a body was recovered in a disused property in the Steinish area of Stornoway.

“At this time we believe the body to be Liam Aitchison. A police family liaison officer is with the family. Our thoughts are with the family and friends at this time.

“The body has not been formally identified and we have to wait the outcome of a post mortem” which will take place in Inverness in the coming days.

He said police are treating this as “a suspicious death and an inquiry team has been set up.“

He said police are keen to trace Liam's movements over the past week and “we are appealing for anyone who has any information to contact police in Stornoway on 01851 702222 or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.

Area Commander Gordon MacLeod added: "We have had a very positive response so far and I wish to express my thanks to the public for their assistance and for the help we have so far received.

“Now that this is being treated as a suspicious death, it is important to get as much information as we can about Liam's movements over the past week so that we can establish what has happened. I would appeal to anyone who has any information to get in touch with us as Stornoway Police Station."

Detective chief inspector Kenny Anderson said the death was being treated as “suspicious due to the initial police examination at the scene.”

He added: “We are appealing for information as to Liam’s movements between about 9pm on Tuesday 22nd November - when he was last seen in the Macaulay Road area in the Co-op - and approximately, 2pm on Tuesday 29th of November, when the remains of a boy, who we believe to be Liam Aitchison, was recovered.”

It is thought Liam was spotted on CCTV footage in the Macaulay Road Co-op store and is  believed to have been around Anderson Road on the last day he was seen.

His is body was found in a former RAF building. It is the original control station for Stornoway airport before being used as a store and latterly a house. The property was lastly rented to civilians  though has been uninhabited for very many years. It has been a target for the few vandals who knew about its presence.
