Call to install large enough subsea energy cable          15/11/11

Highlands and Islands Labour MSP, Rhoda Grant, has pressed for sufficient capacity on the new Lewis energy interconnector.

It is hoped that the link, which will enable the transportation of electricity from renewable energy projects in Lewis to the mainland national grid, could be completed by October 2015 and Mrs Grant is keeping the pressure on SSE (Scottish & Southern Energy) and SHETL (Scottish Hydro Electric Transmission Ltd) to ensure that the link will have adequate capacity to accommodate existing and future renewable energy projects.

Mrs Grant said: “I am pleased to have been informed by SSE that, all being well, the link could be in place by 2015. However I am also very eager to ensure that when the link is introduced there will be sufficient capacity to cope with existing developments, together with any future developments which will come on stream.”

She added: “I understand the proposal is to have a 450mw link, with doubled-up land cable, which would ultimately provide a total capacity of 900mw. My concern however is that only 450mw would be made available immediately.

“I am aware that the interconnector which runs from Uist to Skye is experiencing capacity issues at the moment which is hampering new renewable energy developments in that area and I have written to SHETL (SSE’s transmission business) asking if it is possible to increase the capacity on that link.

“I do not wish to see the new link in Lewis experience the same problems and I have urged SHETL to ensure that as much capacity as possible is made available on the Lewis link from the outset to prevent a repeat of the situation we are presently seeing with the Uist connection.”
