Last day for Lewis Chessmen exhibition 10/9/11
Monday 12th September is the last day of the Lewis Chessmen: Unmasked exhibition and the last opportunity to see and learn more about these iconic figures.
Monday will be a day of celebration with music and storytelling throughout the day from 10am to 5pm at Museum nan Eilean.
Daisy Nash will be playing the clarsach, and David and Debbie Nash will be entertaining visitors with traditional Scottish tunes in the Lower gallery where there is also an exhibition of colourful and creative Checkmate Chessmen board games created by local schools as part of the exhibition’s schools programme with An Lanntair. Chrisella Ross will be telling traditional Viking and Scottish tales. The event is supported by Scotland’s Islands funding.
Since the exhibition opened in April this year over 21,000 people have come to see the Chessmen. More than 60% of visitors visited the museum specifically to see the Chessmen.
Partnership lay at the heart of this initiative with the key players being the National Museums Scotland, the British Museum, the Scottish Government and the three tour venues, Aberdeen Art Gallery and Museum, Shetland Museum and Archives and last but not least Museum nan Eilean in Stornoway.

skills to help Museum nan Eilean achieve their ambitions for a museum service fit
for the twenty-
National Museums Scotland and the British Museum are supporting the Comhairle’s plans for a new museum and archive at Lews Castle, the subject of a current Heritage Lottery Fund application.
The British Museum has developed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Comhairle which will encourage future loans and support to Museum nan Eilean.
Six of the chessmen will be on display at Comunn Eachdraidh Uig on Tuesday afternoon.
