Big turn out for Lewis Carnival 7/8/11
Thousands of people lined the streets of Stornoway to watch the Lewis Carnival procession wind its way though the town on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
Organised by the Stornoway Round Table, it is the last major summer event before the school holiday ends in ten days.
Led by the local pipe band, the parade of children and adults in fancy dress took an hour to cover the mile distance into the town centre where fete stalls, children activities and a funfair continued until after 5pm.
Cash from a street collection and stalls will be distributed to local charities and good causes. It is hoped the carnival will raise well over £3,000.
Ali ‘Terry’ Mackenzie, president of Stornoway Round Table said: “The carnival was a great success as the fine and dry weather brought throngs of people out to see the floats and enjoy the stalls and musical entertainment in South Beach car park.
“Even though there were only five the quality of the floats this year were as good as we have seen in a while and a big thank you to the organisations who entered them this year.
“Also many thanks to Charlie Nicolson guest opener and judge for the day as well as Iain X Maciver MC and local band Pandejo for playing at the carnival.”
He was pleased that numbers were up on last summer’s event.
He said: “It has been busier compared to last year. The weather was very favourable and there was so many people in the town.
“There was a really good quality floats and everybody enjoyed the fun.”
He explained: “A lot of work goes into organising the carnival by the Round Table and we try and put on a good day for the community.”
He highlighted all monies raised will go to various local good causes.
The Best Overall Float prize went Running Club with its Tall Sheeps’ theme. Hebridean Chocolates’ chocolate factory was the most amusing original.
The most amusing award went to Neil Mackay’s Snowwhite while a parody of the Royal Family won Laxdale Gaelic Choir the best dressed prize. A giant jellyfish by Macaulay College was judged the best youth entry.
