Volunteers sought for Lewis Carnival            1/8/11

The Lewis Carnival – one of the highlights of the entertainment calendar in the island – takes place this Saturday .

There are five floats booked in so far but the organisers, Stornoway and District Round Table, are hoping that other entrants come forward to participate.

Anyone interested can contact the chairman Ali ‘Terry’ Mackenzie on 07724 843047 or go on-line at www.stornowayroundtable.com where they can view the guidelines and download a form.

Terry said: “We're hoping that businesses or groups of friends get together and participate in what is always a great day out. You don't need a big lorry or trailer to get involved as some of the best and most memorable entries have been on foot.

“These include the Bridge Centre's Chinese Dragon and the 41 Club's Red Barrows. Each year, we rely on people’s support to make the Carnival a success.”

He added: “All the money raised from the street collection is distributed to local good causes and charities, and we're hoping to assist many more this year. Prizes are also on offer for floats and fancy dress competitors."

Helpers are thin on the ground this year and anyone willing would be welcomed.  The Round Table says volunteers would not have to there the whole afternoon, as any time given will be appreciated.

Registration of floats will take place at 1.30pm where vehicles are requested to line up as usual on Willowglen Road for a safety inspection. Entrants who will be walking in the procession are to meet at the Cabarfeidh Hotel at the same time.

This year, the Round Table has Charlie Nicolson setting off the Carnival Procession at 2pm from the Cabar.  The Pipe Band will then lead the procession through the town until the judging commences at South Beach. One of the judges will be Andy Sutherland from Thurso, this year’s Round Table Area Chairman.

Taking on the duty of MC this year is Iain X Maciver. There will be food and other stalls in operation from 1pm and local band ‘Pandejo’ will be the main attraction when they perform later in the afternoon.
