The number of visitors to Kisimul Castle on Barra has increased this summer.

Some 7% more people took the short boat trip to the castle in Castle Bay.

6,655 people visited the seat of the chief of Clan Macneil which is only significant medieval castle to survive in all of the Western Isles between April and September.

The Arnol Blackhouse on Lewis welcomed 14,648 visitors, a 5% increase on last season’s figures.

The extra footfall reflects a general increase across Scotland of people exploring historic attractions said Historic Environment Scotland.

Alex Paterson, chief executive of Historic Environment Scotland, said: “This year’s summer season has surpassed our previous visitor records, as we welcomed over 3.8 million visitors to our historic sites across the country.”
