Islanders die younger              19/10/11

People in the Western Isles are dying earlier than residents in most other parts of the country, according to new figures released by the Office of National Statistics today.

It shows that average life expectancy in Scotland continues to be the lowest out of all UK regions; that men and women living in Glasgow City continue to have the lowest life expectancy in the whole of the UK. Seven of the ten areas with lowest life expectancy in the UK are in Scotland.

Highland Labour MSP Rhoda Grant said: “With Comhairle na Eilean Siar featuring in the bottom ten of areas with low life expectancy, it should drive home to the SNP administration that they need to do much more to tackle poverty and depravation in our communities.

“I am in no doubt that poor health is directly linked to low income and poverty.

She added: “ The Scottish Government need to stimulate job growth, create opportunities for the young, ensure employees obtain at least the living wage and do away with the post code lottery as far as health and other important issues are concerned.”
