Plans for temporary accommodation hostel     3/1/13

Construction of a new £1.9 million temporary homeless accommodation hostel in Stornoway is expected to start this year.

The 24-bedroomed facility will be built on a site at the former Acres pitch opposite the Comhairle’s headquarters on Sandwick Road, Stornoway.

Construction of the two storey L-shaped building will take about a year.

The unit is urgently required to try and tackle the significant problem in the islands where over 200 people a year are officially homeless annually.

Part of the former Acres playing field was turned into a temporary car park while the new Nicolson Institute secondary school was being built. The rear of the pitch was used as a compound for the school construction works.
