Historical talk             13/8/11

Over 100 people turned up in Stornoway Library on Thursday night where Sandy Matheson, Norrie Macgregor and Malcolm Macdonald of the Stornoway Historical Society presented a jovial discussion about the history of four old Stornoway town centre businesses.

The trio focused on James Mackenzie & Son Ltd, Charles Morrison & Son, Roderick Smith Ltd and Hugh Matheson Ltd.

The discussion did not stay in the Cromwell Street narrows, deviating to India, Switzerland and the Baltic Sea in pursuit of the stories of three of the firms.

The night was organised by Tasglann nan Eilean Siar (Hebridean Archives) and was wonderfully well received by the audience who enjoyed the light hearted banter and indeed their own participation at times.

The Stornoway Library continues to display photos and artefacts of old Stornoway shops in the front window and in display cases at the entrance to the premises.
