Western Isles in global 100 beauty spots     8/8/11

The Western Isles have been voted one of the world’s top 100 places to visit by a travel magazine.

Readers of Wanderlust are noted for their passion to seek out authentic travel experiences and explore the world’s most naturally beautiful places.

They reckon Western Isles is on a par with the Great Barrier Reef and whitewater rafting in Nepal.

The islands is 98th on the list - the only place in the UK to make the list.

The magazine said: “Cut off by the wind-whipped waters of the Minch, rural populations have expanded and collapsed over the centuries, but small-scale crofting endures today.

It highlighted: “Ringed by some of the UK’s loveliest white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, these islands are a mecca for marine wildlife too, with whales, dolphins, porpoises and basking sharks all visiting at various times of the year.

“Hikers and bikers will find trails galore, or you could take to the skies and kitesurf over Barra’s beach airstrip, the only one in the UK.
