South Uist flag could represent the Hebrides

It is suggested that the Nordic-style South Uist flag should be adopted as the public emblem to represent the Western Isles.

Presently, the absence of a Hebrides flag to fly at community, sporting and other non-political events means the official Comhairle flag has been used to represent the islands instead.

It has taken only thirty years but the council now feels the time is right to think about a new flag.

There are two designs under consideration. One is the green and  blue Nordic-cross which is a common style for countries with a Viking heritage. The other choice is to keep using the council’s Birlinn flag.

Alternatively, members of the public can suggest a different design. Voting is taking place on the ‘features’ section of the Comhairle website until September.

The flag chosen will have the potential to become a marketing emblem for the Western Isles and would be used at external events, such as the Island Games.

Alternative designs and comments over a flag can be e-mailed to ruairidh.maciver@cne-siar.gov.uk

The Birlinn or Hebridean galley on the council flag seeks to represent the islands’ maritime history.
