School pupils take stage at Hebridean Celtic Festival          8/7/11

A select choir of Gaelic singers from the Nicolson Institute has been chosen to perform at this year’s Hebridean Celtic Festival. They will be joining Isle of Skye natives Niteworks, on the Scotland’s Islands stage in the main arena on the Thursday night (14th July).

The choir, made up of eight native Gaelic-speaking girls will be led by Deirdre Graham a recent graduate of the RSAMD and Emma MacInnes, presenter of the Gaelic radio show ‘Rapal’, on BBC Radio nan Gaidheal.

Niteworks who have recently completed a series of music workshops for several secondary schools throughout the Western Isles, are hoping to use the opportunity to showcase the high quality of talent and musicianship they encountered during this tour.

Ruairidh Graham of Niteworks said: “We are incredibly excited about this project. The girls are outstanding singers and we’re delighted they are keen to perform with us. Closing the Scottish Islands Stage on it’s opening night is a huge honour, so we wanted to do something special. This project was really only possible due to the level of high quality musical talent present at Nicolson Institute. Together we will be performing some of our Gaelic songs.”

Emma MacInnes, 22, who will join Niteworks on stage is from Uist and went to the National Centre for Excellence in Traditional Music in Plockton, said: “It is my first time performing at the HebCelt and of course I am really looking forward to it. We’ll certainly be rehearsing to ensure we perform well on the night.”

The Hebridean Celtic Festival which takes place in Stornoway next week is one of a series of festival appearances by Niteworks this summer which includes Belladrum and Isle of Wedge. Between shows, the band is busy recording their debut release which is due out towards the end of the Summer.

Tickets for the festival are on sale from www.hebceltfest.com or 01851 702333.
