Stornoway construction firm Cal Max has been awarded the delayed contract to finish off the building of the Harris House care home.

The 16-bedroomed building is about 54% complete. It was previously estimated it would cost around £2 million to finish off the construction of the new Harris House care home in Tarbert.

The comhairle accepted the lowest tender for the care development works in Tarbert.

It is to divert an extra half a million pounds from its budgets help finance the costs.

Delays in agreeing the final contract means the new building is unlikely to be finished before early summer.

There will be a five week interval when the residents from the neighbouring existing care home are transferred into the new building.

The present Harris House will be demolished over a three month period.

Construction on the original £4.5 million contract was halted in May after the UBC Group, known locally as Uist Builders, crashed with £11.5 million debts.
