Footwear giant’s bumper order for Harris Tweed   24/11/11

An island weaver has secured a high profile bumper order from international fashion shoes empire Clarks.

The footwear firm has commissioned Luskentyre weaver Donald John MacKay to provide 16,000 metres of Harris Tweed for a new line in shoes the firm is launching.

Mr Mackay is outsourcing the bulk of the larger order to other weavers via the Shawbost mill.

The Clarks brand is sold in some 150 countries with a strong focus on Germany, Japan, China, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, Spain and Italy.

Clarks initially made contact with Mr Mackay in 2005 after he landed a huge order from Nike for a special trainer.

Over the following three years Donald John sent numerous samples of colours to Clarks - a process he repeated recently in the run up to the footwear specialists placing the lucrative contract.
