Harris Tweed biker jacket             1/8/11
The Scottish textile brand of the year, Harris Tweed Hebrides, have teamed up with one of America's most iconic brands - Schott of New York City, whose motorcycle jackets were worn by Marlo Brando in The Wild One, James Dean in East of Eden and Bruce Springsteen on the cover of Born to Run.

Schott's Harris Tweed motorcycle jacket was premiered at a reception held by Harris Tweed Hebrides in New York to celebrate the Centenary of the Orb Trade Mark and "honour the role of the United States of America in the history of Harris Tweed."

Harris Tweed Hebrides creative director Mark Hogarth said: "We have had a phenomenal response to the event and this was one of the main talking points. The Schott jacket is a masterpiece and it is a source of great pride and pleasure to see Harris Tweed being used in this way."

The jacket was designed by Schott’s creative director, Mancunian Greg Chapman, as part of his limited edition Perfecto range.

Greg said: “I grew up with Harris Tweed. My father was a haulage driver and he would wear a jacket over his boiler suit and a shirt and tie underneath. The press and buyer response has been incredible and we look forward to further collaboration with Harris Tweed Hebrides.”

Schott are approaching their own centenary - they were founded in Manhattan in 1913. Their claims to fame also include the introduction of the first zipper jacket in 1925 and the creation of the original bomber jacket, in response to a request from the US Army Air Corps in 1941.

Former UK Trade Minister, Brian Wilson, who is chairman of Harris Tweed Hebrides said that the New York event had been a major statement of confidence in the future of the industry.

He said: "The mill and the weavers are working flat-out at present and in order to consolidate that position, we have to keep getting the message across that Harris Tweed should be part of every leading designer's portfolio of fabrics. Schott is a great addition to our client list."
