Where’s the fuel discount?                       2/11/11

Isles SNP MP Angus MacNeil has today tabled a question with the HM Treasury asking when the fuel duty cut will be implemented in the rural areas.

The UK Government announced in September that they had received the go ahead from the European Commission to implement this scheme.

Chief Secretary to the Treasury Danny Alexander MP announced in October 2010 that the UK Government were going to implement a 5p a litre fuel duty cut in the rural areas, subject to the EU giving them the go ahead to implement the scheme.

Angus MacNeil said: “I feel that time is moving on and we don’t seem to be getting any hint from the UK Treasury as to when this scheme will start. Motorists in rural areas are being hit financially by the high price of fuel, and this will go some way to alleviate the high cost of fuel that drivers in areas like the Hebrides have to pay at the pumps.

“I would hope that since the announcement from the Treasury in September, they have been working in the background to ensure that the start date for the fuel duty cut is imminent, rather than having to wait and wait.”
