Severe gale forecasted          27/1/13

Winds up to Force 9 or 10 are predicted to affect the Western Isles into the middle of the week.

Uist and Barra are likely to be hit by the worst of the bad weather to Wednesday night. The south westerly gales will be severe at times.

An area of low pressure will pass north over the islands on Monday. The centre of a second depression is expected to be over the Western Isles overnight on Tuesday going into Wednesday.

The Met Office said very deep areas of low pressure moving to the northwest of Scotland will bring very unsettled and at times very windy weather during the next few days.

Severe gales in places will be accompanied by cold wintry showers.

It said people should be aware of the need to take extra care and of the potential for disruption, particularly to travel.

Strong winds and rough seas in the open southern Minch may disrupt the MV Clansman’s timetable to Castlebay and Lochboisdale tonight as well as on her inward bound leg on Monday.

The MV Muirneag will not operate on Ullapool to Stornoway freight run on Monday morning.
