Fisheries grants for Western Isles          23/12/12

Projects in the Western Isles have been awarded European grants to support business improvements and growth.

It includes £99,201 for Comhairle nan Eilean Siar towards the improvements in refuelling provision for inshore fishermen at fishery piers, including upgraded tanks and new technology.

Hebridean Seafoods of Uig, Lewis gets nearly £59,000 towards installing a continuous loop rope growing system.

£11,938 for the MFV Brighter Morn of Ardveenish, Barra, towards a new hydraulic system to improve the hauling of nets on board. This work will significantly improve the safety of the crew, while also reducing damage to the catch and therefore improving the returns.

£22,278 to facilitate the conversion of the MFV Heather Isle of North Uist to static gear operations. The business will be able to diversify its operation during October to March annually by converting to prawn creeling.

Also benefiting is MFV Our Hazel of Ullapool, which fishes in the Minch, which receives £55,798 towards upgrading the decking, refrigeration system and engine modernisation, to help the vessel land a higher quality product while operating more efficiently.
