Special ferry after series of cancellations            18/1/13

Cal Mac has arranged a special ferry run to Barra and South Uist after a series of cancellations due to bad weather battering the southern Minch this week.

A Force 8 gale has caused high seas and a heavy swell. The MV Clansman’s last sailing to Castlebay was on Tuesday. Cal Mac has arranged for an unscheduled run on Saturday afternoon from Oban. Passengers on the return leg are expected to arrive on the mainland at 5am on Sunday.

Cal Mac warns passengers the ship may be forced to make an immediate turnaround in Castlebay and Lochboisdale.

South easterly winds gusting over 50 knots also disrupted the MV Finlaggan with the vessel stuck in Skye tonight (Fri).

Her Saturday morning timetable to Harris is cancelled. If the weather permits she will do a run to North Uist first.

The Stornoway ferry MV Isle of Lewis did not sail today but will try and venture out on Saturday. Freight vessel MV Muirneag was also weather-bound in harbour.

There were cancellations for the Sound of Barra ferry for the last two days due to the weather.
