Heavy weather keeps ferries in port            28/12/12

Virtually all Western Isles ferries are stormbound due to wild seas and severe winds in the Minch.

Winds gusting up to hurricane speeds are expected over parts of the Western Isles later.

The MV Alainn cancelled her sailings between Barra and Eriskay so far today. A decision on the two remaining runs will be made later though conditions are not abating.

The Clansman will not sail to Lochboisdale and Castlebay as south westerly winds are gusting 50 to 60 mph up the Minch. Her next sailing is on Sunday on her normal schedule.

The MV Finlaggan is currently stuck in Lochmaddy. All her afternoon sailings - from North Uist., Uig and Tarbert - are cancelled for the rest of the day.

The Stornoway ferry is staying in Ullapool after leaving Lewis late around 8.45am. All other scheduled sailings between Stornoway and Ullapool have been put off.

The overnight freight service between Stornoway and Ullapool will not operate.

The Berneray - Leverburgh (Sound of Harris) ferry is liable to be disrupted.
