Ferries cancelled at start of a blustery week          3/10/11

All Western Isles ferries - barring the Stornoway vessel - are suffering serious disruptions as a strong Force 8 gale batters the islands.

Even the MV Hebrides which usually takes on most adverse conditions on her Lochmaddy-Uig-Tarbert sailings is weather bound in port.

So to was the Lochboisdale and Castlebay ferry to Oban this morning.

Stornoway freight ship, MV Muirneag, is not expected to sail tonight.

The inter-island ferries had their earlier sailings cancelled so far. Whether they sail in the late afternoon depends upon the 3pm forecast.

Wind gusts exceeding 50 mph are expected in Benbeucla and South Uist this afternoon. Heavy clouds and rain is clearing to sunny spells and showers in the afternoon.

The islands will experience rain and blustery conditions all week.

Present winds will weaken slightly but continue into tomorrow. Wind strength is expected to rise again later on Wednesday with a gale blowing into Friday morning. Again, the Southern Isles will bear the brunt of the weather.
