Feeding the birds          10/7/11

Sirs ,

In response to the letter asking “where have all the birds gone?" I lived in Habost at Ness for over 3 years, and, no, there are not as many birds as there is on the mainland but we had a lot of starlings and sparrows in our garden  - summer with their young and in the winter.

People don’t understand the birds must be looked after in the winter, with water put out daily, and feed, especially after the bad last two winters the island has had.

I also use to put up boxes for them to nest in as lack of trees and bushes for nesting. If more people would do this and, once started have to carry on, the problem might not be so bad.

There is no excuses as in the Crofters one can get large sacks of peanuts along with the fat balls and feeders themselves.

It would be a good Idea for people in the know to do workshops to show people how to make the boxes etc, What about getting schools involved in making the boxes?
