Fairground assault              15/9/11

A Lewis teenager who punched a girl who tried to help him was ordered to pay her £500 compensation.

Scott Alexander Mackay was sentenced for the assault when he appeared at Stornoway Sheriff Court yesterday .

The 17-year-old of 19B Garrabost, Point, was placed on a community payback order which includes one year’s supervision.

He must undertake 180 hours of community service and obey a curfew which confines him indoors from 8pm to 6am each Friday and Saturday night for the next nine months.

He previously admitted assaulting a teenager and threatening behaviour.

Procurator fiscal David Teale said Mackay was very drunk and refused permission to go on the fairground rides visiting Stornoway  in August.

He took umbrage at the refusal and was shouting and swearing.

The fiscal said a girl who knew Mackay tried to calm him down but he punched her on the face, cutting her lip.

Lawyer Kevin Macpherson said alcohol was the root cause of the offence.
