Islander dies in fire         19/9/11

An island man has died in a fire on Island Flodda off Benbecula this morning.

Attempts to resuscitate the self-employed seaweed cutter, Angus John Macdonald, 57, known locally as Panda, were unsuccessful and he was pronounced dead on the scene.

A police officer raised the alarm around 9.20am this morning spotting smoke coming from the large timber workshop beside his family home adjacent to the causeway which links the small island to the north shore of Benbecula.

Three fire crews from Lochmaddy and Benbecula attended the incident. Initially, a fire engine from Balivanich, some four miles away, was sent but two more fire engines sped to the scene after it was realised that Mr Macdonald was inside the building.

The fire was extinguished some 30 minutes after the initial smoke was spotted.

Fire and police officers were examining the workshop in an effort to establish its cause.

A Northern Constabulary spokesman said: “About 9.20am today, a fire was discovered in an outbuilding next to a dwelling house on Island Flodda, Isle of Benbecula.

“On arrival of the Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue service and Ambulance, a male person was removed from the building and was found to be deceased.

“Enquiries are continuing and a joint Police / Fire investigation is to take place. A report is to be submitted to the Procurator Fiscal at Lochmaddy. Next of kin have been informed.”
