Drug dealer convicted after trial                      19/8/11

An island drug dealer was convicted at Stornoway Sheriff Court yesterday (Thurs).  Richard Andrew Robertson, 30, of 87 Seaforth Road, Stornoway, will be sentenced next month.

The brief two hour trial only went ahead after an almost year-long series of preliminary legal debates and appeals.

In an unusual move, the details of the alleged crime were conceded by the defence in the trial. Advocate Sean Templeton agreed with the prosecution that his client possessed and planned to sell the various drugs found in the house.

The jury found Robertson guilty by an unanimous decision.  An anticipated appeal is expected to focus upon a point of law.

Earlier, the trial heard Robertson was stopped and searched outside his home at 87 Seaforth Road, Stornoway, after an anonymous tip-off. A wrap of cocaine was found on him on the evening of Saturday 19th September.

He was taken to the town’s police station and later taken back home when his flat was being searched.

Cocaine wraps and £3,040 in notes were found in a cashbox in a bedroom wardrobe.  A further £375 in cash was discovered in the kitchen and more drugs found in a cupboard.

The cocaine had a street value of £2,267 while 21 wraps of cannabis were worth over £600.

He originally faced eight allegations but during the trial this was reduced to two charges - of possessing and intending to supply cannabis and cocaine.

The court heard that neither his girlfriend or anyone else in the house had any responsibility for the drugs.
