Warning about doorstep salesmen           29/9/11

CNES Trading Standards officials have issued a warning to consumers in Lewis about doorstep salesmen operating in their area.

Consumers have been telephoned out of the blue and persuaded to allow the salesmen to visit them in their homes. The salesmen are promoting the installation of solar panels and the officials are concerned about the accuracy of the information being given to consumers during the sales "pitch" and are advising them not to sign any agreement with the company until they have considered other options.

A spokesperson said: “domestic generation of green energy is a growing business and there are government schemes available to promote it. However consumers on the mainland have lost out because they have dealt with companies that are not accredited under the schemes. As with all such sales, consumers should not sign any contract before considering other options.

“They should seek other quotes and ensure that the companies they deal with are accredited under the schemes. If consumers have signed a contract and paid a deposit they can cancel the contract and get their money back but they must cancel within 7 days."
