Dangerous driving        21/7/11

A teenage driver who dangerously overtook another car on a blind corner through a pedestrian crossing has been banned from driving.

Peter Hanbrick of 16 Cearn Fhlodaidh, Stornoway, pleaded guilty yesterday (wed) to dangerous driving at excessive speed when he appeared Stornoway Sheriff Court.

Sheriff David Sutherland also fined him £400 and ordered him to resit the extended driving test before getting behind the wheel again.

Fiscal David Teale explained the 18-year-old ex-army recruit was spotted by police on CCTV cameras overtaking the vehicle in front as they both approached the crossing at Cromwell Street in Stornoway town centre in the early hours of Sunday, 3rd April.

Mr Teale said the dangerous aspect was Hanbrick moving out into the oncoming lane and being unable to see any approaching traffic.

Lawyer Kevin Macpherson said it was a “moment of complete stupidity” and the loss of his driving licence would hinder his chances of getting an apprenticeship.
