Comhairle calls for united front on Crown Estate reform     2/11/11

Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is to spearhead a new campaign to involve community organisations in the reform of the Crown Estate and the transfer of their revenues to community ownership.

The move follows what was described as a very productive meeting between Highland and Island Local Authorities and the Scottish Affairs Select Committee this week. Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and the other authorities will report back to the Select Committee in due course.

Comhairle leader Angus Campbell said: “It is important that we secure the best deal for coastal communities affected by marine developments and that the revenue from these schemes goes to those communities.

“In order to help achieve that I believe we, as communities should be speaking with one voice on the reform of the Crown Estate and the transfer of revenues to local communities.

The Comhairle and the other Highland and Island Authorities will be engaging with our wider communities and local organisations to secure their support in the way ahead on this important reform. We will subsequently report back to the Scottish Affairs Committee.”
