All the councillor’s fault                             2/11/11

Sirs,

I find it very enlightening that councillor McCormack has come clean by admitting that if re-elected he will not be supporting the Scottish Government’s affordable homes project. It would be interesting to know if this his position or is it the position of our council or is it of his Labour minded colleagues ?

One would have thought that such an important policy like this would have been communicated through a formal press release after dialogue with the Scottish Government. Maybe Angus Campbell has not been told yet.

When you look at councillor McCormack's lacklustre performance it is no surprise that he opposes any initiative introduced by the Scottish Government. He is part of the group who are prepared to waste our money by taking legal action against the Government 's opposition to school closures.

He was also vocal in supporting the rural secondary closures, a decision which had its roots in political posturing. So much for being an independent councillor.

Worst of all, he supported the decision by our council to ignore local contractors in favour of giving all of the school contract to a builder outwith the UK.

They chose not to break up the five schools’ project into individual school tenders. This would have allowed local builders to compete for the work, instead the local economy is now suffering.

For local Labour-minded councillors to be overheard laughing at this decision beggars belief. Yet he moans about our local economy, he should take a close look at himself.

We are now facing difficult times where local builders are struggling due to the lack of work, while people from Ireland are gainfully employed. How many people in councillor McCormack's ward are struggling due to this decision ?

We shouldn't forget the knock-on effect that this has upon the local economy. He talks about financial constraints, how much money has our council paid out by not complying with contractual agreements ?

Councillor McCormack's time would have been better spent intervening and trying to avoid these costs than getting into conflict with the Government.

Councillor McCormack states the Government has a responsibility to reduce poverty which would be difficult to argue against. I never heard him once complain about poverty during Labour's thirteen years in office at Westminster and eight years at Holyrood.

During that period poverty grew to record levels which is still a major problem today. The Scottish Government's hands are pretty much tied as it is dependent upon the Westminster block grant and is not able to borrow money for capital projects. This is how the former Labour Government set up the parliament, time for change.

I also notice that he has conveniently forgot the root cause of the UK's severe economic problems, could it have been his favourite party's unwillingness to regulate the banks ?

Despite being involved in politics for some time, councillor McCormack appears to have little knowledge of our political system. I only hope that he states what else he will not being doing for us before the local elections.
