Council may run campaign against high fuel prices       4/9/11

A new petrol price task group may be set up by Western Isles Council to try and tackle the extra high cost of motoring and heating fuel in the islands.

Councillors are to consider developing a campaign strategy highlighting that the pump prices are 82 pence-a-gallon more expensive in the islands compared to Inverness - despite oil products being shipped by the same sea tanker from the Grangemouth refinery.

It means more Western Isles families are worse hit by fuel hikes than elsewhere in the country as area suffers the most from fuel poverty. A recent study by The Energy Advisory Service showed that fuel poverty levels in the Western Isles reached around 60% last year.

Councillors have decided to examine at the pros and cons of setting up a campaign under the same lines as the successful multi-agency, community-based, task groups which won successes in fighting to save the threatened Stornoway coastguard station and the South Uist rocket range.

Island haulage and building firms would be invited to join to show a focused approach.

However, the proposed action group risks replicating the work of an existing campaign group within Western Isles Council.

This week the present internal council group is writing to the UK government pointing out the price disparities between the mainland and islands and highlighting the negative impact the soaring cost of fuel has on businesses, families and the island’s economy.

Chief executive Malcolm Burr will prepare a report on the potential way forward which will include the status of the existing group.
