Funding boost for community fuel station  27/2/13

Plans to install 24 hour fuel pumps in Pairc, Lewis, have received a funding boost.

The Big Lottery Fund Scotland is awarding a £234,680 grant towards the community fuel station facility at the Co Chomunn Na Pairc shop at Ravenspoint.

The former school building in Kershader houses a community shop, cafe, hostel and visitor attraction.

Establishing a fuel storage tank and pump avoids a 20 miles trip to the nearest petrol station. It should complement existing enterprises and help support the economic growth of the South Lochs area.

John Randall, chairman of Co-Chomunn na Pairc, said: “This is tremendous news for our community.

“A fuel service at Ravenspoint will greatly enhance our facilities, and could have a really transformational effect on how people view the idea of living in this very rural part of Lewis.

“Easier access to a petrol and diesel pump has emerged as a top strategic priority for the local community if we are to become more sustainable.”

Cllr Philip McLean said: “This is excellent news for South Lochs and builds on the success of the community shop and café at Ravenspoint.

“Thanks should go to John Randall, Donnie Morrison and Helen Sandison for steering the BIG Lottery Fund application through to a successful conclusion and to the BIG Lottery too for continuing to support the Pairc community.”
