Coastguard tug leaves station a week early          26/9/11

Minch-based coastguard salvage tug Anglian Sovereign has left her station for the final time as the government charter ends.

The contract does not officially finished until the end of this week but the Sovereign left on Friday.

Now only a single tug will cover the whole of the north of Scotland coast where previously there were two. The Anglian Earl was repositioned off the Caithness coast last week to allow the Sovereign to depart.

The former Stornoway tug is presently off Aberdeen waiting to go into drydock to avoid the government paying demurrage to the shipowner - it there would be an extra charge for a delay in removing certain equipment installed as part of the coastguard contract.

There is no sign of a six months reprieve to retain the Stornoway coastguard tug which future long term funding is devised.

Shipping Minister Mike Penning insists the tugs’ contracts will end this week although he concedes that the situation for the Western Isles was different in that there was no commercial alternative and no existing provision that could be utilised.

He has failed to implement temporary funding sources put to him despite previously saying he would extend the contract for six weeks if there was ‘a certain plan for future funding.’
