Recruitment of coastguard coastal rescuers   8/7/11

Volunteer coastguard coastal rescuers are being sought to cover areas across Lewis and Harris.

Members of local rescue teams belong to that community and receive training in search and rescue skills.

They may be called upon to search for a missing person, recover stranded animals and generally back up the emergency services.

The Coastguard Rescue Service is part of HM Coastguard and it uses the skills of its own volunteer personnel alongside other 999 emergency services and rescue services such as the RNLI, to carry out coastal and seaside rescues.

Volunteers get training as rescuers to handle a wide range of capabilities specifically for the coastal environment and the communities they live and work in.

Bragar, Breasclete, Miavaig, Ness, South Lochs, Leverburgh and Scalpay
