Search finds no trace of man             16/7/11

There has been no sign of a man spotted in the sea at Holm.

There was concern the man, aged around 40 years, may have come to some harm and an extensive search of the area was launched with no success.

He was seen in the water around 5.45pm yesterday evening off the shore at Holm Bay at the end of Holm Village, some three miles outside Stornoway.

There were being footprints on the beach though it is unclear if they were his.

Stornoway lifeboat and coastguards undertook a search of the area.  The coastguard helicopter carried out an aerial sweep over the sea and along the coastline but there was no trace of him.

The person is described as being about six feet tall, slim build, aged about 40. He is said to be wearing a black leather jacket and a checked shirt.

Police are appealing for information from or of anyone who may have been walking around the Holm shore yesterday afternoon.
