Climate change meeting at Comhairle nan Eilean Siar 20/9/11
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is this week hosting a transnational Project Meeting for the ambitious ISLEPACT project. ISLEPACT is coordinated by the Comhairle, financed by the European Commission Directorate General for Energy and involves 50 islands from 12 island groups across Europe, from the Baltic Sea to the Aegean Ocean. The project aims to reduce carbon emissions in participating island groups by at least 20% by 2020.
In the Outer Hebrides, the ISLEPACT mechanism will support community generation of renewable energy, energy efficiency measures in residential and business buildings and the introduction of sustainable transport initiatives.
Comhairle Convener, Alex Macdonald, said: "In coordinating the ISLEPACT project, Comhairle nan Eilean Siar has adopted a position of leadership in the area of Climate Change in Europe.
“Europe's islands are in the forefront of the battle against Climate Change and have the most to lose from its effects.
“This week's project meeting demonstrates that the islands of Europe can come together and become leaders and exemplars in the area of carbon reduction, raising the bar for the rest of Europe by addressing climate change issues while revitalising their local economies. We are proud to be leading ISLEPACT and privileged to host our island friends here in Stornoway."
This week's forum is being attended by delegates from Gotland, Samso, Crete, Cyprus, Malta, Madeira, the Azores, the Canaries, Sardinia and the Aegean Islands.
