Church denounces gay marriage           25/11/11

Submission to the Scottish Government Consultation on Same Sex ‘Marriage’ 2011

The Lewis Presbytery of the Church of Scotland is urging the Scottish Government to axe plans to introduce gay marriages.

The Scottish Government proposes to change the law to introduce same-sex marriages in Scotland. It is also consulting over an option of holding religious marriage ceremonies for gay weddings and civil partnerships in church.

The presbytery says it is morally wrong and has lodged its objections in a public consultation on the issue which ends on December 9th.

It advocates retaining the status quo and insists same-sex marriage is against bible teachings.

It submission says it abhors violence or discrimination against all people whet ever straight or gay.

It stresses marriage should exclusively be a union between male and female and is the foundation of a moral family life.

The Lewis Presbytery says the Scottish Government plans will undermine human rights law which states that marriage is a union of “a man and a woman.’

It queries if there is a real demand to allow gay marriages and highlights the number of same-sex civil partnerships have steadily fallen over the past five years in stark contrast to the rise in marriages over the same period.
