Personal statement

I’m Cathie Mary MacIver, one of your Independent candidates for Sgir’ Uige agus Ceann a Tuath nan Loch in the May 3rd council election. Born and brought up in Callanish, I left the island at 17 to go to Aberdeen University and had a varied and enjoyable working life in Africa, Glasgow and London.

Having lived away from home all my adult life, I am delighted to be back home and settled in Carloway. I am 56 years old, warbling tunelessly in the Carloway Gaelic Choir, writing my novel, going on healthy walks in beautiful countryside and joining in community life here which is huge fun!

My main reason for standing as a candidate for Sgir’ Uige agus Ceann a Tuath nan Loch, is to ensure that we maintain the outstanding quality of life that our ward offers. Along with all residents I observe with regret how often our young people have to leave the island in order to secure work, and I am personally committed to do all I can to ensure that our younger generation can choose to stay at home and fl ourish.

My experience in the world of work has made me aware of the challenges that large and small businesses continually face; I am determined to support all rural business and all means of employment in the local area.

I would encourage and welcome your views and hope you will approach me with your concerns.

Experience in regeneration, health and education has given me a broad perspective on social issues; my areas of strength are economic development, education and community safety.  Currently I serve on Carloway Community Association and warble tunelessly in Coisir Ghaidhlig Charlobhagh.

If elected DV I shall:

● hold monthly surgeries and respond promptly to residents’ concerns

● support our primary schools

● promote training and work opportunities

● protect frontline local services

● allocate £3,000/yr of the councillor’s remuneration to support a Youth Advisors group

● support providing a hospitable environment for business

To support new and future industries, the Comhairle can - in addition to existing provision - support entrepreneurs, freelancers and staff teams by:

● ensuring the necessary infrastructure is in place (eg good roads and transport links, adequate broadband)

● investing in a mentored progression from ideas through to achievement for entrepreneurs of all ages

● offering support to businesses relocating here

● working with employers to develop a Local Employment Compact, thereby increasing opportunities for local people while assisting employers with their workforce needs

● supporting the transition to a green, low carbon economy by minimising the costs for business while maximising the opportunities, eg to “green” buildings, employ “green collar” workers
